PC Black Ops 2 players are sent Mass Effect 2 on a Black Ops disk

In a hilarious mix up by Activision/Treyarch, PC players who bought physical copies of the newest Call of Duty game were shipped Disc 2 of Mass Effect II! The video I posted here shows one of these "victims".

I can't even begin to imagine how this entire things happened. The two games are made by different companies and their release dates are years apart. Why were the Mass Effect 2 files just laying around waiting to be mass copied in this factory anyway?

Of course, it does kind of suck if you're one of those affected. As much as I don't like Call of Duty if this happened to me when I bought a game I'd be pretty mad. These guys can't finish the installation and either have to pirate the disk 2 files or wait for Activision/Treyarch to fix their screw up.

On the bright side of all this, CoD players recieved a free version of an excellent Action-RPG, with a great story line (come on, who doesn't love that final suicide mission?!) Those who have never played Mass Effect before may be tempted to. Oh but they don't have the CD keys or Disk 1 data I hear you say! Well fear not, because even Bioware have jumped on the bandwagon of making fun of Treyarch/Activision. In a recent blog post they wrote:

Rumor has it that about a thousand customers who purchased Call of Duty: Black Ops II for PC today were also treated to a surprise copy of Mass Effect 2. If you were one of the affected, chances are you thought it was a mistake, but we prefer to think that it was an omen, and when the universe talks, you should listen.

If the universe thinks that you should be playing Mass Effect right now, who are we to argue? In fact, we want to help! The first fifty fans affected by this phenomenon to send us a picture holding their special disc 2 will receive a code for a FREE PC copy of Mass Effect Trilogy.

Remember, in order to qualify, YOU must be in the picture, and disc 2 of your Call of Duty: Black Ops II must be visible. Got it? Then send your photo to community@bioware.com and you could be playing your very own Mass Effect Trilogy in time for the weekend!

I have to applaud Bioware for taking this how they have, other companies may have got confrontational, but not Bioware. No they turned it into a brilliant marketing opportunity and a competition!

It does make you wonder if the people at the factory who made this mistake are going to suffer/lose jobs over this. This will be easy to trace back to them and will have cost the company a substantial amount, something that will have repercussions for the people responsible.

Opinions on this? How mad would you be if this happened to you? Feel free to post and share!
